Benson isn’t going down without a fight, and her elite squad has her back every step of the way.

The drama of Season 27 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is reaching a fever pitch, and as the precinct gets turned on its head, a familiar face just came back to weigh in on the madness. During SVU’s May 7 episode, Octavio Pisano made a brief cameo as Joe Velasco for a heartwarming reason.

After leaving the Manhattan SVU toward the beginning of the season to become an undercover agent for the DEA, Velasco made his triumphant return to the squadroom in Season 27’s “Deep Under,” this time under a false persona and desperate to solve a human trafficking case that leaked into Benson’s territory. It was an explosive reunion that culminated in Velasco getting shot in the line of duty, but after a swift recovery, Velasco took the puncture wound to the lung as a wake-up call to never get too entangled in an undercover case.

SVU fans enjoyed the reunion with the longtime squad member, and as Velasco’s recovery reached an end, he made sure to connect with Benson before he parted ways again. The catch-up couldn’t come at a better time, as the steadfast SVU Captain has been rocked by her sudden suspension. Here’s what happened:

Velasco encouraged Benson to “back into the fight” after that shocking suspension

As of last week’s episode of SVU (“Impropriety”), Tynan has suspended Benson, seizing her badge and service weapon after filing an official complaint against Benson’s leadership when the SVU Captain had a rough day in court. Torn away from her day-to-day, Benson has found herself at a crossroads, but she’s not without support, as we saw in SVU‘s “Old Friends.”

Finding herself with a surplus of free time on her hands, Benson decided to go for a stroll with Velasco through the park to talk about their uncertain futures. After his undercover mission ended with a shoot-out, Velasco isn’t sure where his path will lead next. Benson and Velasco have that in common.

“So when do you think you’ll be cleared?” Benson asked her former colleague.

“Probably next month, technically,” Velasco said. “We’ll see you if the DEA actually wants me, or if I want them.”

“Well, find out if they have any openings,” Benson quipped darkly, clearly grappling with her Captain status being in peril after 27 years in the unit.

“You don’t have to go back, you know,” Velasco told her.

“Well, if you’re suggesting that I should retire, I’m gonna puncture your other lung,” Benson teased.

“I’m not saying anything, I’m just giving you your own advice: you gotta go where you’re doing the most good,” Velasco reminded his former Captain. “Is SVU still that place for you?”

Benson paused for a moment. “You know, Joe, for the first time in my life, I don’t know anymore,” Benson confessed.

Velasco was eager to know if the union had filed an appeal, and Benson reported that they did a couple of days ago. She’d follow up on the process, but Benson remained disheartened over her odds of winning the case.

“Look, Tynan is strategic. She wouldn’t have suspended me if she didn’t think that she could see it through,” Benson said, but Velasco wasn’t having it.

“Thinking and knowing are two very different things, especially when you’re going up against Captain Olivia Benson,” Velasco said, stopping Benson in her tracks. “But first, you have to get back in the fight.”

It was time for Benson to put her dukes up, and she needed some encouragement to do so. After considering Velasco’s words carefully, she smirked. “It’s not the worst pep talk.”

“I try,” Velasco shrugged.
