Chicago Fire gave fans a closer look into Marcus Burke’s personal life in Season 15, Episode 3’s “Take the Hit.”

Firehouse 51’s newest recruit, Marcus Burke (Da’Vinci), has been feeling the heat on Chicago Fire, and Season 15 just dropped some major lore about the renegade candidate.

Season 15 of Chicago Fire has been jam-packed with twists and turns as Firehouse 51 welcomes a class of candidates on their final rotations before assignment. Burke has made a splash with his unbridled confidence and tenacity, but his recklessness has left him without many friends at the station. As a bit of a lone wolf, he’s remained a mysterious character until Season 15’s “Take the Hit,” when he began warming up to his colleagues.

While he has stolen the show with his rugged charm, passionate dedication, and fiery zeal, Chihards just learned some heartbreaking news about his life outside the firehouse. Here’s what happened:

Tensions were high among Burke and the candidates on Chicago Fire

Season 15’s “Take the Hit” had a promising beginning for the recruits as Lt. Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) congratulated the candidates on their progress, trusting them as they ran into a warehouse during a chemical fire. Despite the candidates receiving ample warning not to touch the gas valves inside, one of them slipped up and touched a gas valve, causing a pressure surge that hospitalized 51 firefighter Tony (Tony Ferraris).

Back at the station, after Stella and Capt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) explained the severity of the snafu, none of the candidates fess up to touching the gas valve. Burke’s renegade reputation — coupled with his decision to visit Gaffney to check in on Tony without him knowing – led some to wonder if he was responsible. But Burke maintained that he wasn’t the culprit.

Frustrated by the mystery, Severide and Stella launched an investigation that revealed candidate McCaffrey (Matthew Daddario) made the mistake during the call. Upon being confronted about lying and avoiding accountability, McCaffrey left with his tail between his legs and called his father, an Illinois state senator, to pull some strings. Soon after, a CFD Chief visited Severide to offer his advice on managing his candidates, clearly swayed by McCaffrey’s father. The nepotism and shirking of accountability emboldened Severide to terminate McCaffrey from the CFD entirely given his dangerous choices and the potentially perilous consequences.

McCaffrey was furious, complaining to the other candidates and ensuring Severide wouldn’t get away with the termination. Burke admonished him for not coming clean, leading McCaffrey to lash out, snapping at Burke about the mysterious front he puts up around the station and the fact that no one knows him.

Meanwhile, Burke’s hospital visit didn’t go unnoticed, prompting Capp to ask Burke why he hadn’t popped in to say hello to Tony. Burke said he didn’t want to bother anyone, but Capp assured him he could connect with them whenever he wanted. Burke seems to be a lone wolf, but in the final moments of the episode, he was spotted at the hospital opening up to his father, who lay comatose in the hospital bed.
