Chicago PD’s latest episode finally brought FBI agent Charie Boyden into the fold, but it was the final moments of the episode that seems to have set up a bigger mystery for the show to explore in the weeks ahead.
After introducing FBI agent Charlie Boyden in the closing moments of the Chicago PD season 14 premiere as the agent assigned to the Intelligence Unit, we finally brought Boyden into the fold in the show’s third episode.
Chicago PD season 14, episode 3 opens with Boyden in his office working on reports as Voight watches on from his office, clearly not happy about this new arrangement. As Voight prepares to head out, Boyden approaches him and questions him about Arturo Dominguez, a drug dealer from the southside, whose case he’s looking into, including a full financial audit. He presses Voight about missing files from the case, and Voight brushes it off as things simply getting misplaced.
After leaving, Voight calls Trudy and asks for her help in looking into Boyden to give him a better idea of who he is. As he ends the call, he notices he’s got a tail and runs the plates of the car before pulling over. It’s his former CI, LaSean Hutchens, who tells him to meet him at their old spot. The pair catch up and enjoy a drink as LaSean encourages Voight to look into the water near an inlet.

Following the tip, Voight sends some divers down to check out the waters. At first, the search doesn’t yield any results, but then one diver pulls up a bag with a human arm, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg as they recover several similar bags with various body parts all belonging to the same victim, an unnamed woman.
Voight sends Ruzek and Burgess off to search leads as Boyden arrives at the scene and informs Voight of his intention to get into the weeds of things with the team on this case to help him assess the unit. He questions the intel that led him to the crime scene, and Voight notes that the details will be in the reports. Voight then pays LaSean a visit to press him on the intel and what he knows, but LaSean doesn’t offer up any additional information.
When Voight heads to the morgue, he’s greeted by a group of moms waiting for him asking to see the body. It turns out they all have missing daughters and come down to the morgue whenever something comes through on the police scanners. Voight informs the three moms that the woman’s head was not recovered and the only way to identify her will be via DNA, as he asks for identifying features that could help make an ID.
The women’s daughters, India Lewis, Kendra Simmons, and Bailey Young, become the Intelligence Unit’s primary leads, as all fit the timeline for how long the remains were in the water and are in the age range of the victims. Ruzek finds a video showing eight bags dropped into the water by a masked individual, suggesting there are two bags that haven’t been found.
Ruzek and Voight return to the scene to search the surrounding area for the missing bags and find the victim’s head, which indicates the victim was Kendra Simmons. With their victim identified, Voight and Burgess each begin chasing down leads, with Voight meeting with her mother to learn more about her daughter as Burgess speaks with the detective working on her case as she shows her the evidence they found during the investigation. The conversation with Detective Lopez points them in the direction of a man named B-Rock, who has a reputation for being into teenage girls.
They track B-Rock down, but it goes nowhere as Imani works to plant a tracker in his car to follow his movements, but once they go to track it, the signal is down, suggesting they just got burned. They begin looking into his driver, who seems like a loyal subject, just as the tracker sends a signal through pointing them to the warehouse district. Voight and Imani head out to the location where the signal pinged as it goes off again. A voice yells out for them to put their guns away as B-Rock’s driver shows up and tosses them their tracker. She informs them that she can help give them everything they need in exchange for $30k which can help her get out of Chicago. As Voight and Imani prepare to leave, she shows them that she’s legit as she references the blue bags used to dispose of the body.
The team regroups back at the bullpen and discusses their options, which is when Imani informs them that the 1505 funds have been frozen and they can’t use the funds. Voight goes to confront Boyden about the frozen funds as Boyden makes it clear he cannot unfreeze the funds but offers to help get him the money from a private donor with deep pockets. Voight makes it clear he doesn’t use donor money, as their money always comes with strings. Unfortunately for Voight, Trudy’s investigation into Boyden came up empty-handed as she was unable to dig up any dirt on him.
Voight and Burgess meet with Tia and offer to help her sister, who is facing murder charges, in exchange for information. Tia makes it clear that her sister is a bad person and deserves to do life in prison. Tia wants to help, but she doesn’t want to die for the information she has to offer.
With his hands tied, Voight goes to see Boyden to ask about the donor money and what it will cost him. Boyden lets him know that it could come with a favor down the line as Voight makes it clear he wasn’t talking about the donor: he wants to know what Boyden wants for the help. Boyden points out how his friends told him someone was sniffing around in his past and asks Voight how he can earn his trust, which Voight makes clear isn’t something easily earned. Boyden agrees to help with the money in exchange for the missing files in the case he initially inquired about.
Voight and Burgess meet with Tia, and she gives them the full intel on what happened between B-Rock and Kendra, including how he confessed to her murder and chopping her up in his basement. The team gets a warrant and searches the place, but the search leads them nowhere.
Imani and Voight head out to speak with Kendra’s mom to see if she knows anything about a “nest” that came up in messages exchanged between her and B-Rock. This leads them to a vacant building where they find hair with blood on it in the drain of the basement floor. With the evidence they need, the police track B-Rock and Voight corners him, but when B-Rock pulls a gun, Voight has no choice but to shoot him, and he dies at the scene.
Back at HQ, Voight informs Boyden that Tia got her money and is on her way out of town. Boyden informs Voight he spoke with Kendra’s mom, who told him about being part of a group of mothers with missing children. Boyden is helping send some funds to the missing person unit to help them out, as it’s clear they’re underfunded and in need of help.
After the case is solved, Voight is surprised to learn that B-Rock’s corner has quickly been taken over and is now a hot spot for activity. He heads out to confront LaSean but finds him dead in his car, hinting there is something much bigger at play.
