After the end of NCIS Season 23, it seemed like all anyone would be talking about between seasons was who shot whom between Special Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Tim McGee’s (Sean Murray) teen son, Mateo (Patrick Keleher). Then CBS announced that OG star Michael Weatherly is returning as Tony DiNozzo for a season-long arc.
That begins in the Season 24 premiere, airing Tuesday, October 6, and CBS has released details and photos that reveal what brings Tony back to D.C. and shows him back in his old workplace. In (the very aptly-titled) “Wayward Son,” the logline teases, “While dealing with the fallout from the shooting involving McGee’s son, the team investigates a mysterious new threat to the Secretary of the Navy and receives help from an unexpected source: Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), newly arrived in D.C. to open a satellite office of his private security firm.”
Torres was the one to pick up on some suspicious behavior from Mateo in the Season 23 finale, like him using an NCIS workstation even after saying he’d decided not to apply for the cyber internship. When Torres confronted Mateo, the teen told him to drop it and warned, “They could be watching.” He was also armed. As the episode ended, we only heard a gunshot. After, showrunner Steven D. Binder told TV Insider, “Someone was hit.”
Meanwhile, last time Weatherly was onscreen was in his and Cote de Pablo‘s one-season Paramount+ spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, and the couple was back together and had cleared their names. Tony was also back at work at his security firm. These new details in the logline prove that all that business with them being framed didn’t hurt his firm’s reputation, if he can open up a satellite office.
