Former Law & Order: SVU Star Dann Florek Admits His Departure Was ‘Out of the Blue’ and Not What He Pictured After 35 Years as Donald Cragen
Florek, 76, says he still does not understand the choice to write him off the show
Dann Florek has some thoughts on his Law & Order: Special Victims Unit exit.

The actor, 76, appeared on the Tis Yourself Podcast in Nov. 2025, where he spoke with host Nicola Bardon about the shock across the fandom when season 27, which aired in Sept. 2025, opened with a memorial service for Captain Donald Cragen (Dann Florek), the longtime leader of the SVU squad and mentor to Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler.
“That was kind of a surprise, out of the blue,” he admitted. “But I guess the good thing about that to me is the outpouring of everybody, fans, how much they really enjoyed the character, and they would point out their favorite episodes and things like that. And [they shared] a lot of things that I had forgotten about, but it was kind of heartwarming —bittersweet but heartwarming to see how people responded to that.”
Florek said he didn’t know the character’s death was in the works and was surprised because, “I had been doing a number of guest spots with Chris Meloni on Organized Crime. I thought we were discovering a whole new side of the character, that he could be less buttoned down out of the squad room, and just a whole other side of him and his personality.”
The actor was “stunned” when he got the call. “And I said, ‘Well, do you want to hear what I have to say?’ And they didn’t really. They felt it was a necessary thing for them that I still quite don’t understand.”
While there was some disappointment around the decision, Florek said, “The other side of it is the whole journey was pretty amazing. You know what I mean? Like I say going back 35 years, and I was on the stage where we started. So it was kind of like there were so many echoes and ghosts and going back and remembering from the very first day of the mothership and then getting back there with SVU.”
“It was a little overwhelming, you know what I mean? Because you’re standing there with all of those years and all of that stuff and all of those well over 400 episodes kind of flashing around,” he continued.
While Benson and Stabler’s relationship with Cragen is examined in the episode, fans were disappointed that they didn’t get a final moment between Cragen and SVU‘s other big duo — Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Fin Tutuola (Ice T).
“That’s what was missing for me. And you know, not that it had to be heroic or anything crazy, but it would have been interesting, especially if it was at least an episode or even more. If it was his passing, that he could have moments with each of those characters because they all were very important to him and the relationships changed with every one of those characters over the years,” he said.
Florek is excited to figure out his next chapter. He hinted the theater may be what’s next for him as he shared, “ I keep looking for something a little more eccentric or new or maybe something like totally different from anything I’ve done.”
