Benson is looking after Bruno after he took “one for the team” in SVU’s Season 28 episode “Anonymity.”
Detective Terry Bruno has been benched on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but Kevin Kane tells NBC Insider not to worry too much about what’s next for the beloved SVU character.
“He gets to take a little time off and be with himself, which is probably a nightmare for Bruno, but we’ll see,” Kane humorously teases. “Don’t worry, it’s not that much of a break. He doesn’t have that much of a life to do anything else.”
SVU’s latest case in Episode 3 (“Anonymity”) challenged Detective Terry Bruno as the investigation hit close to home, touching on childhood wounds. The episode also highlighted how Bruno has been struggling to connect with anyone outside of his job, which continues to keep him emotionally isolated.
Below, Kane unpacks SVU Season 28’s must-watch episode with NBC Insider, describing the scene leading up to his character’s brief break from the grind as “pretty tense.”
Kevin Kale explains why Bruno took “one for the team” in SVU‘s “Anonymity”

In SVU‘s “Anonymity,” Bruno found himself torn after the squad’s investigation led them to a horrific CSAM site on the dark web with dozens of pedophilic moderators and producers and innumerable victims. Identifying these victims on the site was like searching for needles in a hay stack as the squad was tasked with going through hours of the site’s disturbing material. But the case struck a nerve for Bruno, who harbors his own traumatic history with childhood abuse.
Despite Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) cautioning against anyone diving into the dark website alone, Bruno stayed overnight to watch hours of videos, identifying 26 missing children.
“I think for Bruno, personally, he’s been a victim. It motivates him, and it’s really just a difficult, difficult thing when kids are involved,” Kane explains to NBC Insider. “He thought he was taking one for the team by doing that, because everyone else has a family to go home to and children to look at, and he doesn’t. So he thought he’d do everyone a solid. And nobody can do that by themselves.”
While Bruno’s service was helpful, the veteran members of the SVU were concerned about Bruno as he continued with the case, reminding Bruno he didn’t need to weather that traumatic task alone, and frankly, shouldn’t. “In a general sense, these kinds of tasks and having to do these things are an unspoken part of the job, and it’s hard to go through those things and have a positive spin on the world and get yourself out of bed every day and stay positive,” Kane says.
The case hit major turbulence after the SVU’s investigation began to conflict with a slow-rolling federal case, with Benson clashing with FBI Agents at every turn. Bruno, in particular, grew furious with the feds dragging their feet out of fear of being made, preferring to help the victims in front of them. Benson agreed, going behind the feds’ back to conduct a raid against the flagged pedophiles. It was an administrative power play that led to swift justice despite the feds’ frustrations.
Kevin Kane breaks down Bruno and Benson’s “tense” conversation on SVU

After wrapping up the case, Benson caught Bruno at his desk and thanked him for all of his hard work. Benson then told Bruno that she’s benching him for a short time. Bruno was naturally miffed, but Benson assured him she wasn’t punishing him for anything; she just felt Bruno needed some time to prioritize himself after throwing himself too deep into the case.
“OK, I hear you,” Bruno told Benson, accepting she had a point before adding, “But maybe I was just following your lead.”
“Goodnight, Bruno,” Benson said, not allowing the spotlight to linger on her own issues as the episode came to a haunting end.
“It’s a pretty tense moment,” Kane recalls of the scene. “I feel like there’s a mutual recognition of the same issue. So I think there’s a little hypocrisy. I think that makes him mad, but he’s also very concerned for Benson, because the reason he’s there is because she was the only person in the world who listened to him and believed him. So there’s a connection there that they always have each other’s back.”
As for those last words, Kane explains, “I think he’s acknowledging that what she’s saying about him is happening to her, and I think it was just a kind of passive way to say it. Like, who’s looking after you?”
